After the driftnet ban, swordfish fishery faces sustainability & market pressures Shester pointed to the renewed push from fishermen to make pelagic longline fishing legal again in California. Mindful that large-scale pelagic driftnet fishing, a method of fishing with a net or a combination of nets intended to be held in a more or less vertical position by floats and weights, the purpose of which is to enmesh fish by drifting on the surface of or in the water, can be a highly indiscriminate and wasteful fishing method that is widely.

This move, which was unprecedented under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), 29 prevented the keeping on board or use for fishing of driftnets on particular species listed in Annex VIII of Regulation /97, 30 including albacore tuna and swordfish, traditional staples of the French and Italian driftnet fishing fleets, respectively. HISTORY OF DRIFTNET FISHERIES IN OPERATION The North Pacific Squid Driftnet Fishery Participants and Target Species The North Pacific squid fishery was dominated by Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and Taiwan (Republic of China). Driftnet mesh sizes were designed to harvest three species of "red" squid: the neon flying squid, Ommastrephes bartrami, (aka-ika), the principal fishery, .

The concept of responsible fisheries and the possibility of elaborating guidelines or a code of practice for responsible fisheries that would take into account all the relevant technical, socio-economic and environmental factors was first raised by the Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) during its discussions about large-scale pelagic driftnet fishing.

Status of large-scale pelagic drift-net fleets As far as FAO is aware, the Mediterranean Sea is the only region in the world where large-scale pelagic drift-net fishing gear (i.e., nets in excess of km) is being deployed.

The vessels using this gear in the Mediterranean, and which target swordfish, are primarily of Italian and French flags. Drift netting is a fishing technique where nets, called drift nets, hang vertically in the water column without being anchored to the bottom.

The nets are kept vertical in the water by floats attached to a rope along the top of the net and weights attached to another rope along the bottom of the net. Drift nets generally rely on the entanglement properties of loosely affixed netting.

The term driftnet fishing describes a scaled up fishing technique that uses nets to coral a school of fish. It has been an especially efficient form of fishing through the ages for many species of pelagic fish, small and large, that travel the oceans in large schools.

The most recent global concerns expressed about driftnet fishing started in. consists of large-pelagic fish caught by driftnet fish-eries (FAO, ). Driftnets are passive nets deployed at the water surface or in the water column and used for targeting pelagic species (European Commission, ; Caddell, ).

It represents 11% of exports (about 10 millions € in ), but part of the catch is also sold locally in Tahiti. From the late s tolarge-scale pelagic driftnet fisheries in the North Pacific targeted flying squid (Ommastrephes bartrami), tunas and the late s, cooperative multinational scientific observer programs began on Japanese, South Korean, and Taiwanese driftnet fleets fishing in international waters.

THE PELAGIC DRIFTNET FISHERIES OF THE NORTH PACIFIC [Vol. The pelagic driftnet fisheries of the North Pacific are conducted by vessels from Japan, Taiwan and the Republic of Korea and are composed of distinct fleets designed to catch specific species, such as salmon, squid, marlin, or sailfish.

Each vessel in the fleet. Fishery observers and at-sea monitors collect data from U.S. commercial fishing and processing vessels as well as from shore-side processing plants.

Observers are professionally trained biological scientists gathering first-hand data on what's caught and thrown back, which supports science, conservation, and management activities. The high-quality data they collect are used to monitor.

InNMFS convened the Atlantic Offshore Cetacean Take Reduction Team to address bycatch of several marine mammal stocks, including pilot whales, in the Atlantic pelagic longline, pelagic driftnet, and pair trawl fisheries.

For example, the international pelagic driftnet fishery killed an estimated ∼ loggerheads yr −1 until it was banned by international accord in The pelagic longline fishery was estimated to kill a minimum of loggerheads yr −1 across the entire Pacific Basin, roughly half of which ( loggerheads yr −1) may be killed in.

Yellow croaker driftnet fishing was selected in these experiments because this is a very common fishery in Korea and because there is frequent loss of nets in this fishery (Kim et al.,a).

In general, a driftnet is a type of gillnet that is set in water so that is can drift freely.
